Pine Hill Falls: The Novel

The book about our town. The Town of Pine Hill Falls is proud to announce the publication of a novel set right here in our community. Everyone in town has read it. We especially recommend it to folks who travel alone.

The Story

“We were expecting you.”

On his thirty-fifth birthday, Alan Walter, a lonely network technician, takes a shortcut his GPS suggests and ends up in a small Maine town that isn’t on any map. In Pine Hill Falls, everyone knows his name. They give him a house, a job, a woman who seems to have loved him forever. Everyone smiles all the way up to their eyes, all the time. And every night at 3:12, the townspeople walk barefoot into the street.

Excerpts

The novel is written in French. These excerpts were translated for this website.

Chapter 2. The Register (excerpt from the uncensored edition)

That’s when I saw the woman. She was walking down the middle of the street ahead of me, in the beam of my headlights, moving away. An older woman in a pale nightgown, her hair loose on her shoulders. The cotton, damp with fog, clung to her ankles. She was barefoot on the cold asphalt. She set her feet down flat, without the slightest hesitation, as if she were walking on carpet.

Chapter 2. The Register

It was a real old-fashioned register, with columns ruled by hand and printed headings. Date. Name. Address. License plate. Room. And the last column, the narrowest one: Emergency contact.

I filled in the boxes one by one. The date, my name, my address in Manchester, the Subaru’s plate. When I got to the last column, my hand did what it always does: it skipped the box and went back to the left to wait for a room number.

Chapter 3. The Morning After

The sign had been repainted too. The pole was white and the arrow bright pink, and every letter of the neon was lit in broad daylight, TWIN PINES MOTEL, all in a row, without a flicker. Underneath, on the rectangular panel, VACANCY glowed steadily. The NO was dark. I looked at that dark NO in the middle of everything that had been fixed. The owner, I figured, didn’t need to turn it on, since the motel was empty.
